Faust is the work of Goethe's lifetime, and this first part, published in 1808, is the one most often read and staged. The scholar Faust, weary of all knowledge, makes a wager with the devil Mephistopheles, who undertakes to serve him and show him pleasure in exchange for his soul should he ever be content. Their journey takes them from the study to a tavern, a witch's kitchen and the Walpurgis Night on the Brocken, but the heart of the play is Faust's seduction of the young Gretchen and the ruin it brings on her and her family. This edition presents Bayard Taylor's translation of 1870, which keeps Goethe's own meters and rhymes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
