This Side of Paradise
This Side of Paradise, published in 1920, was F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel and made him famous at twenty-three. It follows Amory Blaine, the handsome and self-regarding son of a wealthy Midwestern family, from a pampered childhood through prep school and Princeton, where he reads, drinks, argues about literature and falls in love. The war interrupts his education; the loss of the family fortune and a failed engagement to the debutante Rosalind Connage interrupt his assumptions about himself. Fitzgerald mixes narrative with letters, verse and a stretch written as a play, and the book became a portrait of the postwar generation: restless, skeptical of its elders, uncertain what to want.
