The Beautiful and Damned
The Beautiful and Damned, published in 1922, is F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel. Anthony Patch, a Harvard graduate with no occupation, lives in New York on the expectation of inheriting his grandfather's fortune; he marries Gloria Gilbert, beautiful, willful and as idle as himself, and the two settle into a round of parties, rented houses and quarrels while they wait for the old man to die. When the grandfather walks in on one of their parties and disinherits them, the waiting becomes a lawsuit and the drinking becomes a habit. Fitzgerald drew on his own early marriage, and the book is harsher and sadder than its glamorous surface suggests, a study of talent and youth spent on nothing.
