Flappers and Philosophers

by F. Scott Fitzgerald

About 4 h 02 min of reading48 chapters

Flappers and Philosophers, published in 1920, was F. Scott Fitzgerald's first collection of short stories, issued a few months after his first novel. It contains eight stories: "The Offshore Pirate," in which a bored heiress is abducted from her uncle's yacht; "The Ice Palace," about a Georgia girl engaged to a Northerner; "Head and Shoulders"; "The Cut-Glass Bowl"; "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," a comedy of social rivalry between cousins; "Benediction"; "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong"; and "The Four Fists." The young women of the title, quick, restless and self-possessed, are set against older ideas of duty and propriety, and the stories show Fitzgerald's early mix of romance, satire and melancholy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
