F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was an American novelist and short-story writer, born in St. Paul, Minnesota, who left Princeton without a degree and married Zelda Sayre a week after his first novel, This Side of Paradise, made him famous in 1920. He named the Jazz Age and lived it, in New York, Paris and the Riviera, writing The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender Is the Night and some 160 stories for the magazines that paid his bills. Zelda's breakdowns, his alcoholism and the Depression ended the party; he died of a heart attack in Hollywood at forty-four, leaving The Last Tycoon unfinished and believing himself forgotten.
