The Great Gatsby
Nick Carraway, a young Midwesterner selling bonds in New York in the summer of 1922, rents a small house on Long Island next to the mansion of Jay Gatsby, a man of uncertain origins who gives enormous parties and seems to be waiting for someone. The someone is Nick's cousin Daisy, married to the wealthy and brutal Tom Buchanan and living across the bay. Gatsby has rebuilt his whole life to win her back, and Nick becomes the go-between and the witness. Published in 1925, the novel sold modestly and was out of fashion when Fitzgerald died; it has since become the most widely taught American novel. It is short, lyrical and exact about money, cars, music and the way the rich treat other people. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
