The Value of Money

by Benjamin M. Anderson

About 13 h 46 min of reading36 chapters

The Value of Money, published by the American economist Benjamin M. Anderson in 1917, is a sustained critique of the quantity theory of money as it was then taught, in particular the version formulated by Irving Fisher. Anderson argues that the value of money cannot be explained by mechanical equations relating money supply and prices, and that it rests instead on social value, credit, confidence and the real forces of trade. The book examines the functions of money, the role of banks and bank credit, the gold standard and the velocity of circulation, and it closes with Anderson's own account of how money comes to have value. It was his doctoral work at Columbia University, expanded. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
