Arrian on coursing

Arrian on Coursing is the Cynegeticus of Arrian, the second-century Greek historian best known for his account of Alexander, here writing as a sportsman about hunting hares with greyhounds. Arrian wrote the little treatise as a supplement to Xenophon's work on hunting, describing the Celtic hound, the points of a good dog, its feeding, training and kennel, the conduct of a fair course and the religious observances due to Artemis. William Dansey's translation of 1831, published anonymously as the work of a graduate of medicine, surrounds the text with classical and practical notes, a life of Arrian and a long appendix on the hunting dogs of antiquity, illustrated from coins and reliefs. It is a scholar's book for coursing men. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
