The Anabasis of Alexander

by Arrian

Translated by E. J. ChinnockAbout 9 h 54 min of reading217 chapters

Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander is the most trusted ancient account of Alexander the Great's campaigns, from his crossing into Asia in 334 BC to his death in Babylon in 323. Writing in the second century AD, Arrian drew on the memoirs of two of Alexander's officers, Ptolemy and Aristobulus, and he says plainly when his sources disagree. The seven books cover the battles of the Granicus, Issus and Gaugamela, the siege of Tyre, the burning of Persepolis, the hard fighting in Bactria and India, and the long march back through the desert. Arrian admires his subject but records the murders, the drinking and the mutinies as well. This edition presents the text in E. J. Chinnock's translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
