Arrian, in full Lucius Flavius Arrianus (c. 86–c. 160), was a Greek historian from Nicomedia in Bithynia who rose high in the service of Rome, holding the consulship and governing the frontier province of Cappadocia under Hadrian. As a young man he studied with the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, whose lectures he took down and published as the Discourses and the Enchiridion, the only record we have of his teacher's thought. In later life he wrote history in imitation of Xenophon, above all the Anabasis of Alexander, the most reliable surviving account of Alexander's campaigns, and the Indica, a description of India and the voyage of Nearchus.
