Fifty years in Wall Street
Fifty Years in Wall Street is the memoir of Henry Clews, an English-born banker who arrived in New York in the 1840s, built one of the leading brokerage houses of the Civil War era and watched the market from the inside for half a century. Published in 1908 as an expansion of his earlier Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street, it describes the panics of 1857, 1873 and 1907, the gold corner of Black Friday in 1869, the operations of Jay Gould, Daniel Drew and Commodore Vanderbilt, the fall of the Tweed Ring and the rise of the trusts, with character sketches, anecdotes and firm opinions on speculation. It is a primary source for the history of American finance. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
