The Sexual Life of the Child
Albert Moll, a Berlin physician and one of the founders of modern sexology, published The Sexual Life of the Child in German in 1909, and this English translation by Eden Paul, with an introduction by the American psychologist Edward L. Thorndike, appeared in 1912. Moll sets out to describe, on the basis of medical observation, how sexual feelings and behavior develop in childhood and youth, discussing the sexual organs and impulse, the differences between boys and girls, normal and pathological symptoms, their causes and their importance, and then the role of parents, teachers and schools in education. Cautious and often critical of Freud, the book is an important document in the early history of the scientific study of childhood.
