About 5 h 32 min of reading24 chapters

The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy, published in 1920 with an introduction by Madison Grant, is Lothrop Stoddard's racialist account of world politics after the First World War. Dividing humanity into colored blocs, he argued that the growing populations and nationalism of Asia, Africa and Latin America threatened white dominance, and he called for immigration restriction and eugenics to defend it. The book sold widely and fed the debates that produced the restrictive American immigration laws of the 1920s; F. Scott Fitzgerald satirized it in The Great Gatsby. It is read today as a primary document of scientific racism and its influence, not as a credible account of race. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
