Lothrop Stoddard (1883–1950) was an American historian and journalist whose books promoted racial theories now discredited. Born in Massachusetts and trained as a historian at Harvard, he began with The French Revolution in San Domingo (1914) before turning to world politics. The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy (1920), introduced by Madison Grant, and The Revolt Against Civilization (1922) urged immigration restriction and eugenics, and were cited in the debates that produced the restrictive American immigration laws of the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald satirized his ideas in The Great Gatsby. His work is studied today as a record of scientific racism.
