The Psychology of the Emotions

by Théodule Ribot

About 10 h 55 min of reading99 chapters

The Psychology of the Emotions, published in English in 1897 in the Contemporary Science Series edited by Havelock Ellis, is a study by Théodule Ribot, professor at the Collège de France and a founder of experimental psychology in France. Ribot treats feelings as rooted in the body and in instinct rather than in ideas. The first part covers general questions: physical and moral pain, pleasure, neutral states, the nature and conditions of emotion, its classification and the memory of feelings. The second part studies particular emotions, from fear, anger and sympathy to the feelings of the self, sexual instinct, the social, moral, religious, aesthetic and intellectual emotions, and ends with normal and morbid characters. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
