Théodule Ribot (1839–1916) was a French psychologist and philosopher, a founder of scientific psychology in France. A graduate of the École normale supérieure, he introduced French readers to English and German psychology in two influential surveys and founded the Revue philosophique in 1876. He taught at the Sorbonne and from 1888 held the first chair of experimental and comparative psychology at the Collège de France. His studies of memory, will, personality, attention, the emotions and the creative imagination treated mental life as rooted in physiology, and his work on diseases of memory gave its name to Ribot's law.
