The Parables of Our Lord

by William Arnot

About 11 h 07 min of reading44 chapters

The Parables of Our Lord, first published in 1864, is a set of expository studies on the parables of Jesus by William Arnot, a Free Church of Scotland minister in Glasgow and Edinburgh. After an introductory essay on the nature and purpose of parabolic teaching, he takes the stories in turn, the sower, the tares, the mustard seed, the hidden treasure, the lost sheep, the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the unjust steward, the rich man and Lazarus, the Pharisee and the publican, the laborers in the vineyard and the talents, among others, explaining the natural and social background of each and drawing out its spiritual meaning. Arnot writes for ordinary readers, with illustrations from Scottish life and plain evangelical piety. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
