by Edward of Norwich

About 5 h 52 min of reading43 chapters

The Master of Game was written in the early fifteenth century by Edward, second Duke of York, grandson of Edward III, who was later killed at Agincourt. Much of it is a translation of the Livre de chasse of Gaston Phoebus, Count of Foix, with chapters added on English hunting practice. It describes the nature of the hare, hart, buck, roe, wild boar, wolf, fox, badger, wildcat and otter, the breeds and ailments of hounds, the qualities of a good hunter and the ceremonies of the hunt. This edition, prepared by William A. and F. Baillie-Grohman, gives a modernized text with an introduction, notes and illustrations from medieval manuscripts. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
