The Grey Friars in Oxford
A. G. Little's study, printed for the Oxford Historical Society in 1892, reconstructs the life of the Franciscan house that stood in Oxford from the thirteenth century until the Dissolution. The first part is a history of the convent itself: its arrival in the town, its buildings and lands, its place in the university and its dealings with townsmen, bishops and kings. The second part gathers biographical notices of the friars who studied and taught there, among them Roger Bacon, followed by appendices of original documents. Little admits in his preface how thin the surviving records are for the middle period, and he builds the book patiently from charters, chronicles and manuscripts. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
