The body of the work then covers orthography, etymology, syntax and prosody, each rule followed by observations, examples, and hundreds of "improprieties for correction" drawn from other grammars and from standard authors. Brown is exacting and quarrelsome, and his book is the great monument of prescriptive grammar in America.
