Goold Brown (1791–1857) was an American grammarian. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, into a Quaker family, he taught for many years in New York, where he kept a private academy, and later returned to Lynn, Massachusetts. His Institutes of English Grammar (1823) and First Lines of English Grammar were widely used school texts, but his life's work was The Grammar of English Grammars (1851), a volume of more than a thousand pages that surveyed every previous English grammar, catalogued their errors and laid down rules with exhaustive illustration. Severe, learned and combative, it was the largest work on the subject ever produced in America.
