The Faust-Legend and Goethe's 'Faust'

by H. B. Cotterill

About 1 h 54 min of reading4 chapters

The Faust-Legend and Goethe's Faust, published in 1912, is a set of lectures by H. B. Cotterill, a scholar and translator who had given them several times in England, Switzerland and Germany. The first lecture traces the old legend of the magician who sold his soul to the devil, from the historical Doctor Faustus and the sixteenth-century chapbook to Marlowe's play and the puppet shows. The two lectures that follow guide the reader through Goethe's Faust, both the first part with the tragedy of Gretchen and the more difficult second part, explaining their structure and ideas. Cotterill keeps the informal, sometimes humorous tone of the lecture hall. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
