The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844
with a Preface written in 1892
The Condition of the Working-Class in England was written by Friedrich Engels at twenty-four, after two years in his father's cotton firm in Manchester, and published in German in 1845. This English translation by Florence Kelley appeared in 1887 and carries the preface Engels wrote for it in 1892. From official reports, newspapers and his own walks through the slums, Engels describes the industrial proletariat the factory system had created: the great towns and their courts and cellars, competition and Irish immigration, the physical and moral results, the condition of factory hands, miners and farm laborers, the labor movements and the attitude of the bourgeoisie. The book was the first full study of an industrial working class. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
