Friedrich Engels (1820–1895) was a German social theorist, revolutionary and businessman, the lifelong collaborator of Karl Marx. The son of a textile manufacturer of Barmen, he was sent in 1842 to the family's cotton firm in Manchester, and The Condition of the Working-Class in England (1845) came out of what he saw there. With Marx he wrote The Communist Manifesto (1848); afterward he worked for twenty years in the Manchester business, supporting Marx financially. His own books include Anti-Dühring, Socialism: Utopian and Scientific and The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, and after Marx's death he edited the second and third volumes of Capital.
