The clipper ship era
an epitome of famous American and British clipper ships, their owners, builders, commanders, and crews, 1843-1869
The Clipper Ship Era, published in 1910, is Arthur H. Clark's history of the fast sailing ships built in America and Britain between 1843 and 1869. Clark had commanded ships himself, and he dedicates the book to the shipbuilder Donald McKay, a friend of his boyhood. He sets the scene with earlier American shipping, the East India Company and the Atlantic packets, then follows the opium clippers, the repeal of the British Navigation Laws, the rush to California in 1849, the record passages of the Flying Cloud and her rivals, the China tea trade and the crews and captains who drove the ships. The book mixes sailing records with firsthand memories of life on board. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
