The Bronze Age and the Celtic World
The Bronze Age and the Celtic World, published in 1922, began as six lectures Harold Peake gave at Aberystwyth. Peake, an archaeologist and museum curator, uses the evolution and spread of the leaf-shaped bronze sword as a thread by which to trace the movements of peoples across Europe in the second millennium BC, and he connects the swords with the arrival of the Celts in the lands later called Celtic. The later chapters take up the old question of where the Indo-European languages originated, the division between P-Celtic and Q-Celtic, and the wanderings of the people he calls the Wiros. His conclusions have been superseded, but the book is a clear statement of the archaeological method of its time. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
