Some Reminiscences of Old Victoria, published in Toronto in 1912, is Edgar Fawcett's memoir of the city he had known since it was a Hudson's Bay Company post on Vancouver Island. Born in Australia and taken to San Francisco as a child in 1850, Fawcett came north in the gold-rush years and set down these recollections, he explains, while recovering from typhoid. He describes the fort and early streets, the officials and public departments of the colony, the fire companies, ships of the Pacific Station, churches, schools and cemeteries, pioneer families and figures such as Bishop Cridge, and episodes of violence and excitement, ending with a roster of the surviving "fifty-eighters" of the Fraser River rush. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
