Some Principles of Maritime Strategy, published in 1911 by Julian Stafford Corbett, lecturer at the Royal Naval War College, is the classic British statement of what a navy is for. Corbett begins with the theory of war taken from Clausewitz, distinguishing limited from unlimited wars and showing how an island power has used limited war and the sea to its advantage. He then defines command of the sea as control of communications rather than possession of water, examines the constitution of fleets and the concentration of force, and treats the methods of securing, disputing and exercising command: defense against invasion, the protection of trade and the support of expeditions. The Green Pamphlet of definitions is appended. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
