Julian Stafford Corbett (1854–1922) was an English naval historian and strategic theorist. He turned to history in the 1890s with Drake and the Tudor Navy (1898), followed by studies of the Mediterranean, the Seven Years' War and Trafalgar. From 1902 he lectured at the Royal Naval War College, where he applied Clausewitz to sea power, and Some Principles of Maritime Strategy (1911) set out his argument that command of the sea means control of communications and that Britain's strength lay in limited war waged with fleet and army together. After the First World War he wrote the first three volumes of the official history Naval Operations.
