Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy, published in 1909 by Hugo Münsterberg, the German-born professor of psychology at Harvard, is an examination of the treatment of illness by mental means at the moment when such treatment had become a public enthusiasm in America. Münsterberg first sets out the psychological basis of the subject, the relation of mind and body and the nature of suggestion and the subconscious. He then surveys the practice: hypnotism and its uses and dangers, the treatment of hysteria, neurasthenia, phobias, alcoholism and other disorders, and the psychotherapy of bodily disease. A final part considers the place of such treatment in relation to the physician, the clergyman and the community, with a critical look at Christian Science and the Emmanuel movement.
