Hugo Münsterberg (1863–1916) was a German-American psychologist, born in Danzig and trained under Wilhelm Wundt at Leipzig. William James brought him to Harvard in 1892 to direct the psychological laboratory, and he remained there for the rest of his life, becoming a pioneer of applied psychology. On the Witness Stand examined the reliability of testimony and memory in court, Psychology and Industrial Efficiency helped found industrial psychology, Psychotherapy surveyed the mental treatment of illness, and The Photoplay was an early theory of film. His defense of German culture after 1914 made him unpopular in America, and he died of a stroke while lecturing at Radcliffe.
