Mexico: A History of Its Progress and Development in One Hundred Years, published in 1911, is Marie Robinson Wright's illustrated survey of the country at the centennial of its independence, dedicated to President Porfirio Díaz. Wright, an American travel writer who had visited every Mexican state, begins with the Spanish conquest, the viceroyalty, the war of independence and the early republic, then praises the Díaz government and describes the centennial celebrations of 1910. Most of the book is a tour of Mexico City and the states one by one, with chapters on society, art, churches, schools, railways, customs, natural resources and ancient ruins. Its admiring view of Díaz dates from the eve of the revolution that overthrew him. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
