McGuffey's Third Eclectic Reader
McGuffey's Third Eclectic Reader belongs to the revised edition of the series of school readers that William Holmes McGuffey began in the 1830s and that taught generations of American children to read. Designed for pupils who had mastered the primer and the first two readers, it offers short lessons in prose and verse, each with a list of new words for spelling and definition, and exercises in articulation and expression. Among the pieces are The Shepherd Boy, Johnny's First Snowstorm, The White Kitten, The Beaver, The Blacksmith, Who Made the Stars?, Mary Dow and The Pert Chicken. The tone is plainly moral, praising kindness, honesty, industry and piety. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
