McGuffey's Second Eclectic Reader
McGuffey's Second Eclectic Reader is the second book in the series of graded school readers first compiled by William Holmes McGuffey, an Ohio educator, and used by many millions of American children during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This is the revised edition of 1879. After notes on articulation and punctuation, it offers seventy-one short lessons for young readers, mixing stories, poems and simple descriptions of animals, nature and daily life, many of them carrying lessons in kindness, honesty, obedience and hard work. Vocabulary lists head each lesson. The book is a window on how American children learned to read and what moral values their schooling sought to instill. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
