McGuffey's Eclectic Primer, Revised Edition
McGuffey's Eclectic Primer is the first book in the series of school readers that taught generations of American children to read, beginning in 1836. This Revised Edition of 1881 opens with the alphabet and proceeds through fifty-two short lessons, each built on a handful of new words, a picture and a few plain sentences about children, pets, farm animals and household scenes, with review lessons at regular intervals. The moral tone is gentle and direct, and the book closes with slate exercises and a script alphabet for the first attempts at handwriting. It is a small document of the nineteenth-century schoolroom, and still usable as a beginning reader. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
