McGuffey's First Eclectic Reader, Revised Edition
McGuffey's First Eclectic Reader is the opening book of the series that taught reading to generations of American schoolchildren. This is the revised edition of 1879, which kept William Holmes McGuffey's method of short graded lessons while updating the content. It begins with the alphabet and proceeds through brief lessons, each introducing a few new words, followed by a reading exercise about children, animals and home, often with a moral, and sometimes a passage in script for copying. Review lessons and slate work are interspersed. The whole book is short and was meant to be worked through slowly, with the teacher supplying much that the printed page leaves out. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
