McGuffey's Fourth Eclectic Reader
McGuffey's Eclectic Readers taught generations of American children to read, and the Fourth Reader was meant for pupils who had mastered the basics and were ready for real literature. It opens with practical instruction in punctuation, articulation, accent, inflection and emphasis, with exercises for reading aloud. Then come more than a hundred lessons in prose and verse, stories, fables, anecdotes, descriptions of nature and moral poems, drawn from many writers and each followed by definitions and notes. The moral tone is plain and the selections are chosen to teach character as well as skill. It is a revealing document of the American schoolroom around the turn of the century. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
