McGuffey's Sixth Eclectic Reader
McGuffey's Sixth Eclectic Reader was the most advanced volume in the series of school readers associated with William Holmes McGuffey, which taught generations of American children to read and shaped their idea of good literature. It opens with a long introduction to elocution, with exercises in articulation, inflection, accent and emphasis, reading verse, the voice and gesture. The body of the book is an anthology of more than a hundred and thirty selections in prose and verse by British and American authors, from Shakespeare, Milton and Addison to Irving, Dickens, Longfellow and Bryant, each preceded by a short biographical note and followed by definitions and notes. Moral reflection runs through many of the choices. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
