Manures and the principles of manuring
Manures and the Principles of Manuring, published by the Scottish agricultural chemist Charles Morton Aikman in 1894, is a treatise on soil fertility for farmers and students. Aikman begins with the history of the subject from Liebig onward and the chemistry of plant nutrition, then examines the sources of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash in the soil, the fixation of nitrogen by leguminous plants, then recently demonstrated, and the losses by drainage. The second half treats the manures themselves: farmyard manure and its management, guano, bones, superphosphate, basic slag, nitrate of soda, sulphate of ammonia, potash salts and lime, with their composition, action and economical use. Appendices give the experimental data. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
