Lyrical Ballads, With a Few Other Poems (1798)
Lyrical Ballads, published anonymously in 1798, is the small volume with which William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge set English poetry on a new course. It opens with Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancyent Marinere" and closes with Wordsworth's "Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey," and between them come poems about beggars, a mad mother, a convict, an idiot boy and a girl who counts her dead siblings among the living, written in deliberately plain language. The two poets wanted to show that ordinary people and everyday incidents could carry serious feeling. This edition reproduces the text of the first edition, before the preface and rearrangements of 1800. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
