Horton Genealogy

by Geo. F. Horton

or Chronicles of the Descendants of Barnabas Horton, of Southold, L. I., 1640.

About 6 h 52 min of reading270 chapters

Dr. George F. Horton compiled this family history, published in Philadelphia in 1876, to trace the descendants of Barnabas Horton, who settled at Southold on Long Island around 1640. It begins with family traditions and relics, among them an old house, a family Bible, a musket and a walking staff, and with notes on the antiquity of the name in England. It then follows the family generation by generation, recording births, marriages, deaths, migrations and occupations across two centuries. Like many nineteenth-century genealogies, it mixes careful records with family stories, and it remains a useful source for descendants and for the social history of early New York and New England. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
