History of Ancient Art is Franz von Reber's survey of the architecture, sculpture and painting of the ancient world, revised by the author and translated and enlarged by Joseph Thacher Clarke for an American edition published by Harper in 1882. Reber, director of the Bavarian state picture galleries in Munich, moves from Egypt to Chaldea, Babylonia and Assyria, Persia, Phoenicia, Palestine and Asia Minor, and then to Greece, Etruria and Rome, describing for each the building methods, temples and tombs, statues, reliefs, painting and decorative arts, and relating them to religion and social life. With more than three hundred illustrations and a glossary of technical terms, it was written as a handbook for students and general readers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
