Franz von Reber

Franz von Reber (1834–1919) was a German art historian and museum director. Born in Bavaria, he taught the history of art and architecture at the University and the Polytechnic of Munich and from 1875 directed the Bavarian state collections of paintings, including the Alte Pinakothek. He wrote handbooks covering the art of the ancient world, the Middle Ages and later periods, notably his History of Ancient Art and a history of medieval art, which were translated into English and used widely by students. He also wrote on the ruins of ancient Rome.
