History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations Who Once Inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighbouring States.
History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations Who Once Inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighbouring States was written by John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder, a Moravian missionary who lived among the Delaware (Lenape) and their neighbors for most of his adult life, and first published in 1819. The first part gives the history of the Delaware and of their relations with the Iroquois and the Europeans as the Indians themselves told it. The second describes their government, education, marriage, hunting, food, dress, medicine, religion, oratory, warfare, treatment of prisoners and burial, with many stories from Heckewelder's own experience. He writes as a defender of a people he saw being destroyed, and his book is a principal source for their culture.
