John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder (1743–1823) was a Moravian missionary among the Delaware and other Indian peoples of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Born in Bedford, England, to a German Moravian family, he came to Pennsylvania as a boy and from 1762 worked with the missionaries David Zeisberger and others, living in the mission towns on the Muskingum, serving as interpreter and agent for the United States in treaty negotiations, and surviving the destruction of the mission at Gnadenhutten in 1782. His History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations and his Narrative of the Mission of the United Brethren are among the principal sources on the Lenape.
