English Caricaturists and Graphic Humourists of the Nineteenth Century.
How they Illustrated and Interpreted their Times.
Graham Everitt's study, published in a second edition in London in 1893, sets out to show how English caricaturists and comic artists illustrated and interpreted their times. Beginning with the political prints sold in the shops of Regency London, it follows the careers of the artists who drew for satirical sheets, comic annuals, novels and magazines, down to the death of John Leech in 1864. Everitt describes their lives, their methods and their best-known plates, and uses their work to recover the jokes, fashions, scandals and politics of the age. With about seventy wood engravings after the originals, the book is both a history of an art and a picture gallery of social life. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
