Crimes and Punishments

by James Anson Farrer

Including a New Translation of Beccaria's 'Dei Delitti e delle Pene'

About 4 h of reading48 chapters

Crimes and Punishments, published in 1880 by James Anson Farrer, combines a study of the Italian reformer Cesare Beccaria with a new English translation of his treatise Dei delitti e delle pene, first published in 1764. Farrer's opening chapters describe Beccaria's life and character, the influence of his book on legislation across Europe and especially in England, and the problems of penology in his own day. The translation that follows sets out Beccaria's argument chapter by chapter: that punishments should be proportionate, prompt and certain rather than severe, that laws should be clear, and that torture, secret accusations and the death penalty should be abolished, with prevention placed above punishment. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
