James Anson Farrer (1849–1925) was an English writer on anthropology, history and literature. Educated at Oxford, he published Primitive Manners and Customs (1879), a comparative study of so-called savage societies, and followed it with Crimes and Punishments (1880), which included a new translation of Beccaria's treatise. His other books include Military Manners and Customs, Paganism and Christianity, Literary Forgeries and a study of Adam Smith. He wrote in a skeptical, rationalist spirit and often challenged received opinions.
