A Study of Recent Earthquakes
A Study of Recent Earthquakes, published in 1905, is the English seismologist Charles Davison's account of individual earthquakes studied in detail during the second half of the nineteenth century. Rather than offering a general textbook, he devotes each chapter to a single event, among them the Neapolitan earthquake of 1857 investigated by Robert Mallet, the Ischian earthquakes of 1881 and 1883, the Andalusian earthquake of 1884, the Charleston earthquake of 1886 and the Riviera earthquake of 1887. For each he explains how investigators mapped damage and intensity, located the epicenter, estimated the depth of the focus and measured the speed of the earth waves. Closing chapters treat earthquakes at sea and shocks recorded only by instruments. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
