Youth, first published in 1898, is the story in which Joseph Conrad introduced his narrator Marlow. Around a dinner table, Marlow tells his old friends of his first voyage to the East as second mate of the Judea, an old barque carrying coal to Bangkok under the motto "Do or Die." The ship is battered by storms, leaks, catches fire from her own cargo and finally goes down, and Marlow reaches the East in an open boat. Drawn from Conrad's own experience, it is a short, vivid tale of hardship remembered with irony and with longing for the confidence of youth.
